Hi there!
My name is Ethan Shafron. I am a Data Analyst with the University of Montana Spatial Analysis Lab using remote sensing and other computational methods to answer ecological questions.
In the summer you can find me out in the field leading crews on ecological projects across the state of Montana.
Technical Skills
I am interested in scientific computing and nutritious applications of remote sensing data. My go-to tool is Python, but I frequently also use R and GUI software when applicable.
- Geospatial programming with Python (GDAL, numpy, sklearn, scipy, skimage, rasterio, Shapely, Proj, pandas)
- Statistical inference with R (Tidyverse, lme4, JAGS, Raster, sf)
- Basic raster processing with Julia (ArchGDAL)
- Command line GDAL/OGR for geospatial data manipulation
- Linux utilities (wget, sed, awk, find, grep, GNU parallel, vim, tmux)
- Git for version control
- High performance computing, primarily with Slurm
- Rudimentary working knowledge of web development
- Basic JavaScript for use in Google Earth Engine
- Advanced GIS skills with ArcMap 10.x, ArcGIS Pro 2.x, and QGIS 3.x
- Basic species distribution modeling with MaxEnt
Other Skills
In addition to spending a good chunk of time behind a screen, I also spend a good amount of time doing other things.
- Plant ID using dichotomous keys and/or field guides (particularly in the Northern Great Plains and Northern Rocky Mountains)
- German language (speaking, writing, reading - effective operational proficiency)
- AIARE 1 Avalanche Training course
- Backcountry travel planning and coordinating
- Survey design and testing
- Competent drummer, with over 12 years experience, 9 years of gigging experience
